Welcome Message of the Dean

I would like to take this opportunity to express my pleasure to welcome you to the 8th World Conference of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agriculture and Life Sciences (GCHERA), hosted this time here at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), Lebanon.

It is really one of the most exciting and memorable times in the history of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) and in agriculture in general, particularly since, it is the first GCHERA conference to be held in the Middle East and North African region (MENA). Hosting such a conference is impressive, that’s why we at the FAFS at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) are very proud, and are looking forward to organizing it. We specifically gave special attention to the theme of the 2015 GCHERA Conference entitled: “Universities’ Global Challenge: Nutritional Security and Environmental Sustainability for Human Health”.

Feeding the world, providing food and nutritional security, developing a sustainable agriculture, are truly big challenges, and are the motivation behind all we do at the FAFS. Hosting the GCHERA 2015, is in this regard, very promising and rewarding, since colleagues from different backgrounds (Science, Academia, Government and Industry) will meet, think, collaborate and establish a network to find the most suitable solutions for the emerging challenges for the sake of future generations.

With regards to the 21st century being considered the century of biology, the study of agriculture is developing at an outstanding rate. Consequently, we believe that our faculty, founded in 1988, will benefit from this conference, and enhance its international prominence by assuming a greater role of leadership in agricultural research, education and extension. All of this, to benefit our biggest asset “our students”, the future engineers, thus I would like to take the opportunity, through this message to address them with my profound gratitude and wish them the best of luck.

As we look forward to building on that legacy for the coming years, we will continue to shape our traditional strengths and push the envelope of new, exciting opportunities, and we hope that the GCHERA 2015 will be the chance for us to prove it and show it to all of you.
At the end, we are proud to host you and we wish that you will experience the great Lebanese hospitality and be part of our proud traditions.

Best regards,

Lara Hanna Wakim, PhD
